My pharmacy says I need a prior authorization. What is that?

A prior authorization, or prior auth, describes a process pharmacies take before applying insurance coverage to certain medications.

Most insurance companies have a predetermined list of the drugs they’ll cover. This list is called a formulary. When a medication is not on the formulary, insurance companies must manually review the prescription before applying your insurance benefits.

If your insurance company ultimately decides it won’t cover your prescribed medication, other options exist. You might even find a lower price through ScriptHero by not using your insurance benefits.
